Rewriting Returns: How Whistl Parcels Helped WeBuyBooks Drive Engagement
Who are WeBuyBooks?
Founded in 2007, WeBuyBooks has grown from a small, passionate team into the UK's leading buyer of second-hand books and one of the largest sellers of used books on Amazon. Their mission is simple, to help people declutter their homes, earn extra cash, and give unwanted books a second life.
Operating a successful recommerce model, WeBuyBooks makes it easy for customers to sell unwanted items from the comfort of their own home. By extending the lifespan of books, the business is also helping customers reduce waste and lower their carbon footprint.
Whistl has partnered with WeBuyBooks for more than 15 years, initially supporting their outbound mail requirements before expanding the relationship to include reverse logistics and returns management.
The Challenge
As WeBuyBooks continued to grow, the business recognised an opportunity to improve the experience for customers sending items back after completing a sale through its website.
Previously, customers were limited to a single carrier option when returning books. While the process worked operationally, it was largely viewed as a carrier return service rather than an extension of the customer experience. This restricted customer choice and offered little flexibility around how and when customers could send their items.
With growing customer expectations around convenience, visibility and delivery options, WeBuyBooks wanted to provide a more customer-centric solution that would make the process simpler and more accessible while helping to reduce operational issues such as lost parcels.
The Solution
To support these ambitions, WeBuyBooks implemented Whistl Parcels' reverse logistics solution, creating a direct API integration between the WeBuyBooks website and the Whistl returns platform.
The integration enabled WeBuyBooks to offer customers a wider range of carrier and service options when sending their items. Instead of being restricted to a single return method, customers can now choose from multiple carriers and collection services, including:
-
Home collection services for maximum convenience
-
Access to a broad network of out-of-home drop-off locations
-
Flexible return options that fit around individual schedules and lifestyles
-
Improved tracking and visibility throughout the return journey
The transition was completed smoothly, supported by close collaboration between the WeBuyBooks and Whistl teams. The technology integration provided the flexibility needed to enhance the customer experience without adding complexity to operations.
The impact has been significant. By reframing returns as a key part of the customer journey and offering greater choice, WeBuyBooks has seen higher customer engagement and increased customer satisfaction. Operational performance has also improved, with lost parcels reducing from approximately 1.5% to virtually zero.
