Latest Trends in Consumer Use of Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes have become a firmly established part of the UK eCommerce landscape, with food emerging as the most popular category and younger consumers leading adoption.

New research from The Whistl Group, including Whistl Parcels, reveals how UK consumers are engaging with subscription box services, the categories they favour and what this means for retailers and delivery partners.

Subscription Box Usage Continues to Grow

The research, conducted among a UK‑wide representative sample of 1,000 consumers, found that 38% of the UK population has used a subscription box service.

  • 45% of women have used a subscription service, compared to 30% of men

  • Usage is highest among 18–31‑year‑olds (58%)

  • Only 17% of over‑65s have used a subscription box

Geography and income also play a role. Subscription box usage increases with household income, and Londoners show the highest adoption at 45%, compared to Northern Ireland at 19%, the lowest regional penetration.

Delivery Frequency: Monthly Leads the Way

When asked how often they receive subscription boxes:

  • 58% receive monthly deliveries

  • 23% receive weekly deliveries

  • 8% receive bi‑monthly deliveries

  • 11% receive deliveries less frequently

This highlights the importance of consistent, reliable delivery experiences, particularly for brands operating on a recurring fulfilment model.

What This Means for Subscription Retailers

Subscription box usage in the UK is continuing to rise and was expected to reach £1bn in value by 2022, underlining the long‑term opportunity for online retailers.

For brands operating subscription models, delivery plays a crucial role in the overall customer experience. From product production through to final‑mile delivery, every touchpoint influences brand perception and customer retention.

Retailers need to work closely with experienced fulfilment and parcel delivery partners to ensure the quality of delivery matches the quality of the product inside the box.
